Towns and Villages

The gateway to the Isle of Man is, of course, Douglas. Step off the ferry and within minutes you will be transported back into a bygone age with its cheery guest houses lining the promenade, the friendly clip-clop of the horse trams and thousands of sparkling lights. The best place to see the Island's capital is from high up on Douglas Head. There the whole of Douglas Bay as far as Onchan Head is spread out before you with its endless procession of hotels and guest houses lining the front.

At the ancient City of Peel, St German's cathedral lies a ruin on St Patrick's Isle. Two-thirds of the way through the valley between Douglas and Peel is St John's - the historic centre of the Island where on Tynwald Day, 5th July, the Manx meet in an annual ceremony which has its origins with the Vikings. In the presence of the island's Lieutenant Governor and the Lord Bishop, upon the ancient Tynwald Hill they gather to head in English and in Manx the laws and legislation passed in the preceding twelve months.
