Set in the heart of Northumberland, Alnwick, the county town of Northumberland, is dominated by the home of the Duke of Northumberland - Alnwick Castle. Rising from the banks of the River Aln, this border fortress dates back to the 11th century. At the foot of the castle the ancient market town of Alnwick lies within the town's gateway - the Bondgate Tower known locally as the Hotspur Tower. With its narrow streets, tree-shaded cobblestones, passageways and fine Georgian houses, the bustling town centre offers the visitor a wealth of local gifts and craft shops, art galleries, pubs, cafes and restaurants.

At the heart of the town's activities is the market place. At one time there were eight or more crosses in and around Alnwick, but the most important was the market cross. From here royal proclamations were read, and here too, the stocks and pillory stood. Today it is the centrepiece for the week-long costumed re-enactment of a medieval fair held during the last week in June, the weekly chartered market on a Saturday and also the International Music Festival held during the first week of August.
