Carlisle
A proud historic city which once repelled all invaders today welcomes visitors of every age from every part of the world. For modern Carlisle is a place for people, a city whose spacious pedestrianised centre offers some of the most safe and stylish shopping in Britain. Vibrant (but never too crowded), varied (but not so big as to exhaust the visitor), Carlisle's traffic-free heart is home to shops, stores and restaurants of the highest quality, as well as an award-winning shopping centre cleverly hidden behind the facades of earlier eras. But broad tree-lines squares and beautiful cobbled street with Victorian-style lamps are only part of Carlisle's story. For to wander here is to be amidst a glorious national heritage celebrated at the marvellous Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery, and embodied in everything from the magnificent Castle and intimate Cathedral to the 18th Century Town Hall (now a Visitor Centre) and restored mediaeval Guildhall. With so much to offer so many it's no wonder Carlisle enjoys a reputation for being one of the friendliest and most fascinating cities in Britain.
