Romans![]() Hadrian's Wall An immense barrier stretching from the Solway Firth in the west to the mouth of the Tyne in the east, Hadrian's Wall is Britain's most spectacular memorial to the Roman Empire and a feat of military engineering still as remarkable now as at the time of its construction, almost 2,000 years ago. The Romans made Carlisle - Luguvalium as it was then known - the outpost of their northern frontier for over 250 years, a period stunningly recaptured today at Carlisle's award-winning Tullie House Museum, where special set-pieces and interactive displays take you back to the sights and sounds of those days. As for Hadrian's great creation itself, a marvellous section of the wall is to be found just outside the city, running between Banks Turret and Harrow's Scar milecastle, north east of Brampton. It also features Birdoswald Fort and Visitor Centre, a delightful vantage point high above the Irthing Gorge. Places to visit:More information and places to visit:
