Reivers

Disputed by the English and Scottish Kingdoms, the Border was for centuries the scene of a new kind of lawlessness that reached its peak in the 16th Century. Feuding families plundered the lands and possessions of their rivals in the opposite realm, as well as their own kinsmen.

Reiving, as it was known, signified everything from murder and kidnap to arson and robbery. Its impact changed both the landscape and the language; the words blackmail and bereaved have their origins in this turbulent period of Border history.

The names of the Reiving families also endure to this day. Could you be one of their descendants? Have your expectations (or worst fears!) confirmed at Tullie House Museum - the audio-visual display is a must for every visitor.
