Countryside
Beyond the city centre, peace and quiet awaits you in outstanding natural landscapes at all points of the compass. Venture northwards to Longtown and the River Esk; upstream from the handsome bridge and bustle of England's largest sheep market lie in the beautiful Scottish valleys of Eskdale and Liddesdale. Around the simple church and Anglian cross at Bewcastle you will find wooded river gorges, undisturbed fells and Kershope Forest, part of the spectacular Kielder Forest Park. Alternatively, start in the picturesque village of Wetheral for a journey southwards past the steeply wooded slopes and through stone-built villages beside the broad river Eden. Rising out of the Eden Valley are the wild North Pennine moorlands. Brampton, only ten miles to the east of the city centre, makes a fine base for exploring the Bewcastle Fells, the lower Eden Valley and the North Pennines. It is the scene of a small country market every Wednesday. Also to the south lies unrivalled scenery in the Lake District National Park; head for the traditional fellside villages of Caldbeck and Hesket Newmarket first. In the west the land and rivers meet the sea along the shores of the Solway Firth. Once a haven for smugglers it now teems with wildfowl and wading birds in winter. Watch out too for Haaf net fishermen using a technique dating back to Viking times to catch salmon. Places to visit:More information and places to visit:
