Ripon
Ripon is rightly referred to as a Cathedral City with a compelling history dating from 886 when it was first granted a charter by Alfred the Great. Throughout the years, religion and tradition have played and important role as manifested by the magnificent Cathedral and the proud preservation of ancient customs. One such tradition is that of the Ripon Hornblower who appears each and every evening at 9.00pm to sound his horn at each corner of the Obelisk in the Market Place. This ritual of Setting the Watch originally assured the citizens of Ripon that they were in safe-keeping for the night and has continued without a break for over 1100 years. The focal point for daily activities is the large Market Place which in the case of Ripon is a particularly fine example surrounded by Georgian and Medieval buildings including the Town Hall and half timbered Wakeman's House. The Obelisk erected in place of a Market Cross in 1781 stands in the centre and a busy market takes place every Thursday. So heed the welcome to Ripon and stay awhile amidst its ancient charms.
