A Base to Explore Further Afield![]() Hamble Southampton is the perfect base from which to explore the rest of the Hampshire region. A host of attractions, north, south, east or west of the city, are within easy reach and there are plenty of delights on your holiday doorstep. The picture postcard view of the New Forest, covering 145 square miles of open heathland and woodland, together with the beauty and colour of Furzey Gardens and Exbury Gardens are not to be missed. Englands so-called "Garden Isle", the Isle of Wight also has some fine places to visit. Animal lovers should pay a visit to Marwell Zoo, New Forest Butterfly Farm, Longdown Dairy Farm or Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm and if your children are after a roller coaster day of fun and excitement, Paultons Park or Romsey Rapids should definitely be on your list for the day. There are plenty of historical sites to take in around Southampton - with to ancient city of Winchester, Netley Abbey and Portchester Castle are well worth a day visit. Together with the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, Southampton is certainly a superb base from which to explore the region's heritage treasures! The city's prime location, together with its excellent cross channel ferry links, ensure day trippers too can have speedy access to the French mainland via Cherbourg.
